The Rancho Peñasquitos Adobe, built in 1823, is the second oldest colonial structure in San Diego County and stands within the Los Peñasquitos Canyon. It was the first Mexican land grant in the county, awarded to Francisco María Ruiz, likely inspiring the name “Camino Ruiz Trail” nearby. The adobe was built near the Kumeyaay settlement of Awil Nyawa which is one of many examples where settlers encroached upon Indigenous lands, relying on their deep knowledge of the region. Today, the adobe is su
