Around 220,000 people have been evacuated across southwestern France as wildfires continue to burn near the city of Bordeaux. Tens of thousands were evacuated from areas surrounding the city.

French authorities say more than 220,000 people have been displaced by wildfires, as firefighters continue to battle the flames in France’s Gironde region. CNN’s Melissa Bell reports.

France has warned of a “long and very difficult battle” against a fire raging in southwestern France. Meanwhile, Spain declared its first ever national emergency over a wildfire. And the Scottish government has asked for aerial support from the UK military to boost the response to a major fire in the Highlands.
