Dr. Abigail Waldman, MD FAAD on Instagram: "Accutane has many common side effects including acne purge in the first few months of treatment and dry lips and skin. A daily over the counter antihistamine like zyrtec can help prevent or reduce the initial acne purge by reducing inflammation. Omega 3 fatty acids and fish oil help prevent or reduce dry lips and mouth. Follow if you're starting accutane (isotretinoin) #accutane #accutanesideeffect #acnetreatment #acne"

Accutane is effective for acne but can cause a “purge” or worsening of acne when you first begin it. A second generation H1 blocking antihistamine like Allegra or Xyzal can help reduce the purge. Experiencing severe dry lips and skin is a common accutane side effect. Taking omega 3 fatty acid supplements 1g/day for 16 weeks may reduce those symptoms. #acne #accutane #dermatologist
